At least 64 people were killed and dozens injured when a Renfe AVE high-speed train collided with a stopped Iryo service between Los Yébenes and Urda in central Spain, regional authorities said. The Associated Press later cited a toll of 68, showing that the count was still changing as rescue teams worked through the wreckage. Renfe said 544 passengers were aboard the two trains and activated its victim-assistance plan.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente said a control-centre instruction allowed the Renfe train to proceed despite the other service being stopped after a safety-system malfunction. That is an official preliminary account, not the finding of the independent investigation, which must establish the technical sequence and responsibility. Rail traffic between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia was suspended.

Searches for “Spain train accident” reached a 2K+ bucket in Canada, while a related “train” cluster reached 5K+ in the United States during Google Trends’ preceding four-hour window. Those regional surges identify the immediate questions—where the crash happened, how many people were affected and what caused it—but they are not evidence. The casualty figures and operational details come from authorities, Renfe and independent reporting.
