Bangladesh dengue toll reaches 419 after deadliest month of 2026

Bangladesh’s dengue death toll reached 419 on Saturday after one more patient died and 1,633 people were admitted to hospital in 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. The official cumulative count reached 135,000 hospital admissions, with 6,236 patients still receiving hospital care.
October was the deadliest month of 2026, accounting for 174 deaths after the latest update, compared with 148 in September. Reuters reported that clinicians were seeing patients arrive in shock after delayed treatment and that repeat infections with different dengue-virus serotypes can raise the risk of severe disease. The data count hospital admissions rather than every infection in the community, so they do not measure the full spread of the virus.
Entomologist Kabirul Bashar told Reuters that transmission was likely to continue through November, with substantial improvement unlikely before December. Earlier rain left breeding sites from which Aedes mosquitoes continue to emerge, while changing rainfall and humidity patterns are lengthening the season. The immediate priorities are early diagnosis, safe hospital capacity and removal of standing water. The daily totals remain provisional and can be revised by health authorities.
