Somali troops suffer heavy losses in al-Shabaab ambush

Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed Somali government troops near Awdhegle in Lower Shabelle, killing at least 20 soldiers, a surviving officer told the Associated Press. Reuters separately cited two soldiers who said dozens had been killed. Because the accounts differ and access to the battlefield is limited, Worldbrief is not combining them or treating the higher estimate as confirmed.
Somalia’s defence ministry said government forces killed about 75 militants during the battle but did not disclose military casualties. Officials acknowledged damage to vehicles, while al-Shabaab claimed a larger government death toll. Neither side’s battlefield tally has been independently verified. The unit involved included Turkish-trained Gorgor commandos, according to AP and AFP reporting.
Awdhegle lies on approaches south-west of Mogadishu and has changed hands during repeated offensives. The losses matter because they test the army’s ability to hold territory as international security support changes. Establishing a reliable casualty list, accounting for missing personnel and confirming who controls the area are more useful measures than competing victory claims. Until the government releases names or a documented count, “at least 20” remains the most specific independently reported figure rather than a final toll.
