Russia and Ukraine began a localized ceasefire around the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine early Tuesday. Reuters and the Associated Press reported that both sides said they were observing the pause, which is intended to allow humanitarian aid into the town and civilians to leave later this week. Ukraine's ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, said the operation was coordinated with US First Lady Melania Trump and Russian human-rights commissioner Yana Lantratova.

The arrangement is limited in place and purpose; it is not a nationwide ceasefire. Russia's defence ministry said it stopped shelling toward Kherson from 4 a.m. Moscow time, while attacks continued elsewhere. Ukrainian officials said a strike in Kyiv killed at least one person and injured 15, and also reported casualties in Kharkiv and Pavlohrad. Those separate attacks underline the difference between a humanitarian pause and a broader halt to the war.

The immediate test is whether aid reaches Oleshky safely and whether residents who want to leave can do so without coercion or attack. The pause could offer a narrow confidence-building measure before expected talks in Abu Dhabi in early November, but it does not resolve control of the town or establish terms for a wider settlement.
