North Korea fired about 10 short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward its eastern waters on Thursday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The missiles travelled roughly 250 kilometres, according to the Associated Press. Japan’s Defence Ministry also detected suspected ballistic launches and said the projectiles appeared to fall outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. No damage was reported.

The barrage followed North Korea’s 12 October missile test and came amid renewed tension along the inter-Korean border. Seoul says a North Korean mine injured three South Korean soldiers in September; Pyongyang denies responsibility and has threatened to resume propaganda broadcasts and place new weapons on alert. South Korea has proposed talks to reduce the risk of accidental clashes, but the North has not responded.

The launches are confirmed by South Korean and Japanese monitoring, but their purpose is an inference. Analysts cited by AP said Pyongyang may be seeking leverage as Washington signals interest in renewed diplomacy. That interpretation should not be treated as a stated North Korean explanation. The immediate facts are the number, launch area, approximate range and splashdown zone; the strategic intent remains unresolved.
