A Russian overnight air strike killed a woman and injured three people in Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Monday. The attack damaged a metro station on the capital’s left bank, a 25-storey residential building, non-residential structures and a medical facility. Reuters heard explosions in the city; its account and local officials did not immediately establish which weapons caused each impact.

What matters

The reported casualty and damage figures come from Kyiv officials and may change after inspections. Damage to a metro station is especially consequential because the network also serves as a shelter system during air alerts.

The strike came during another intense exchange of long-range attacks. Associated Press reported that Ukraine had launched more than 1,000 drones toward Russia over the weekend, while Russian forces continued striking Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure. The two reports independently establish the wider escalation, but casualty and damage claims from either side remain subject to revision.

Kyiv’s underground network is both transport infrastructure and a wartime shelter system, so damage to a station can disrupt civilian movement as well as protection during alerts. Officials had not reported a complete closure of the network or identified the woman who died when the first accounts were published. Emergency crews were inspecting the affected sites, and later assessments may change the number of injured or the scale of damage.
