Profits at China's large industrial firms rose 14.4% in September from a year earlier, accelerating from a 4.2% increase in August, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. For the first nine months of 2026, profits increased 15.5%. The official series covers companies with annual main-business revenue of at least 20 million yuan and is not a measure of earnings across the entire economy.

Reuters reported that the headline improvement masked a widening divide between sectors. The electronics industry remained a leading contributor, supported by investment linked to artificial intelligence and computing infrastructure, while weaker domestic demand continued to weigh on parts of consumer manufacturing. The official breakdown showed state-controlled firms' profits up 13.1% in January through September, private firms up 8.7%, and foreign-invested firms up only 0.5%.

The data indicate stronger industrial earnings, but not a uniform recovery. Rapid profit growth concentrated in a few technology and resource sectors can coexist with pressure on employment, household consumption and property-linked industries. The next test is whether gains broaden across company types and consumer-facing production rather than relying mainly on electronics, exports and policy-supported investment.
