Coastal communities across the northeastern United States faced another round of flooding after a slow-moving nor’easter battered the region over the weekend. High tides pushed water into low-lying neighborhoods in New Jersey, while strong winds damaged trees and utility lines on New York’s Long Island. AP reported that a New York City Housing Authority worker died after a tree fell on Saturday.

What matters

A weakening storm can still leave coastal streets exposed at the next high tide. The outage and flight figures describe earlier periods; local flood advisories are the relevant measure of the continuing risk.

More than 100,000 customers across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic lost power at times on Sunday, according to outage data cited by AP. Flight cancellations and delays affected airports along the coast, including Boston Logan. Reuters also reported widespread outages and hundreds of flight cancellations during the storm. Those figures describe different points in time and should not be read as current totals.

The National Weather Service expected the storm itself to weaken, but its late-Sunday outlook kept coastal flood advisories in effect for parts of New York and southern Connecticut into Monday. That distinction matters for residents returning to flooded streets: danger from the next high tide can outlast the heaviest rain and wind. Local warnings remain the appropriate guide as conditions change.
