Ukraine reports new territorial gains in northern Donetsk

Ukraine's Third Army Corps has recaptured a further 51 square kilometres of territory in northern Donetsk, according to Brigadier-General Andrii Biletskyi, the commander overseeing the operation. He said the latest phase freed three villages and restored Ukrainian control over two others. Reuters reported the statement on Monday but could not independently verify the battlefield claims.

What matters

The territorial figures come from a Ukrainian commander and have not been independently verified. ISW’s assessment supports the operation’s strategic significance, but not every village-level claim.

Biletskyi put the total area retaken in the operation, called Vivaldi, at 176 square kilometres. The Institute for the Study of War has described the operation as operationally significant because it disrupted a Russian attempt to make a wide encirclement of Ukraine's eastern “fortress belt” of cities. Russia has not confirmed the Ukrainian figures.

The claimed advance comes as Russian forces continue to press from the south and operate inside parts of Kostiantynivka. Ukraine still controls roughly one fifth of Donetsk region, while Moscow demands control of the whole region in stalled negotiations. Territory in an active war zone can change hands quickly, and figures announced by one military should be treated as attributed claims until independently corroborated. Even so, the reported gains matter because they could complicate Russia's approach to Ukraine's principal defensive cities in the east.
