Aleksandar Vučić resigned as Serbia's president on Sunday, seven months before the scheduled end of his term, as the country heads toward a snap parliamentary election on 25 October. He plans to seek the premiership, a move that would give him another route to lead the government if his party can assemble a majority.

What matters

Vučić’s resignation changes the presidency before the vote, but his plan to seek the premiership leaves open a route back to power. The 25 October parliamentary result, and any coalition that follows, will determine whether that happens.

His party faces a student-led anti-corruption movement and other opposition groups in the vote. The parliamentary speaker is expected to serve as interim president until a separate presidential election. The change in office does not, by itself, settle who will govern after the parliamentary ballot.

The contest will test whether months of political pressure translate into seats for the opposition or whether Vučić's allies retain control. For now, the timing of the resignation changes Serbia's constitutional leadership while leaving the electoral outcome open.
