A missile attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh killed 12 people and injured more than 300 on Saturday, according to Saudi aviation authorities. Reuters, Associated Press and Deutsche Welle reported the official toll. The dead included Saudi and foreign nationals, and several of the injured were in critical condition when authorities released the figures.

What matters

The confirmed toll and disruption make this more than another intercepted strike. Any US entry into the Saudi campaign remained under consideration at publication, while further retaliation could broaden the regional war.

Yemen’s Houthis claimed responsibility. Saudi officials blamed the Iran-aligned group and described the strike as an attack on civilian aviation. The airport had been targeted twice earlier in the week, but Saturday’s attack was far deadlier. Airlines diverted or cancelled flights as operations were suspended and security measures tightened.

US President Donald Trump said Washington was considering whether to join Saudi operations against the Houthis. That was a statement of possible action, not confirmation that US forces had entered the campaign. Saudi-led forces have already launched retaliatory strikes in Yemen, while the Houthis have warned commercial airlines away from Saudi airspace.

The immediate significance is both human and strategic: an international airport suffered mass casualties, and any expanded retaliation could widen a conflict already affecting Yemen, Iran, shipping routes and Gulf air travel.
