NATO jet shoots down drone over Lithuania
An Italian fighter jet on NATO duty shot down a drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus. Lithuanian authorities investigated its origin and carried out an examination of the debris. The following day, Lithuania’s president said the drone was of a type used by Russia and was probably headed toward Ukraine before straying off course. The episode showed how the war’s aerial activity can create security incidents inside NATO territory, even when an attack on the alliance is not established.
What matters
The incident shows how aerial activity from the war can reach NATO airspace even when a deliberate attack on the alliance has not been shown. The drone’s origin and intended route matter to that distinction.
