Days of heavy rain have brought deadly flooding and landslides to India and Nepal. Officials in India's Uttar Pradesh state reported 56 deaths after roughly 60 hours of severe weather. Reuters reported 14 deaths in Nepal by Sunday, an increase from the 12 previously confirmed by the country's disaster agency. The figures could change as rescue and assessment work continues.

What matters

The figures from India and Nepal come from different authorities and reporting times. Rising rivers and further rain risk mean rescue work and local warnings remain more useful to affected communities than any early combined death toll.

Indian officials said more than 1,000 homes had been damaged. Across the border, Nepali authorities warned of possible flash floods in 49 of the country's 77 districts. Rivers were rising above danger levels in parts of the region, adding to the risk for communities already affected by the rain.

The immediate priorities are locating missing people, reaching damaged settlements and monitoring waterways as further flooding remains possible. The separate national death tolls reflect reports available at different times, rather than a final accounting of the disaster.
