Polo nears Baja California Sur with hurricane warnings in force
Hurricane Polo remained a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 125 mph in the US National Hurricane Center's 03:00 UTC Monday advisory. It was moving north at about 12 mph, with its centre roughly 175 miles southwest of Cabo San Lázaro. Forecasters expected it to approach the west coast of Baja California Sur on Monday, cross the peninsula Monday night and move toward northwestern mainland Mexico by early Tuesday.
What matters
The forecast describes where dangerous wind, rain and surge may arrive; it is not confirmation of a landfall. People in warning areas need the latest official advisory because the storm’s path and intensity can change.
Hurricane warnings covered stretches of both coasts of Baja California Sur and the mainland coast from Guaymas to Huatabampito. The centre forecast 4 to 8 inches of rain in parts of Baja California Sur, with local totals as high as 12 inches, and warned of dangerous flooding, mudslides and coastal surge.
These figures are from the 03:00 UTC advisory, not a confirmed account of landfall. Conditions may change before the storm arrives, and residents should follow the latest official local warnings.
