France’s National Rally gains a Senate caucus
France’s National Rally and its allies held 14 seats in the Senate after Sunday’s indirect election, AFP reported, clearing the 10-seat threshold for a separate caucus for the first time. Reuters said 178 of the chamber’s 348 seats were contested and noted that caucus leaders can request votes. The result gave the party a stronger institutional position ahead of the 2027 presidential election, though it did not determine the outcome of that race.
What matters
Clearing the caucus threshold gives the National Rally and its allies a firmer position inside the upper chamber. The traditional right and centre-right still dominate the Senate, and this result alone does not predict the 2027 presidential vote.
