Congo Ebola cases pass 8,000 as health response faces strain

The Democratic Republic of Congo's Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak had reached 8,067 confirmed cases and 3,901 confirmed deaths by 26 September, according to a World Health Organization table based on Congolese government reporting. The figures, published before this article, cover 63 health zones in seven provinces. Associated Press reporting on Monday, 28 September, described shortages of health workers and disruptions to the response.
What matters
The 26 September case count shows a growing epidemic, while response capacity is under pressure. It is not a live tally, and the government data may be revised.
The reported case fatality ratio is about 48%. It describes deaths among confirmed cases and should not be read as the risk facing every infected person: some cases may go undetected, and outcomes depend on access to care. WHO says the government figures can be revised retrospectively. Its earlier outbreak assessment documented continuing geographic spread and warned that delayed detection and deaths outside treatment facilities were hindering control.
The outbreak began in May and involves the Bundibugyo virus, for which WHO says there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Supportive care, testing, contact tracing and safe burials are central to the response. A wider spread would put additional pressure on communities already affected by insecurity and displacement. The latest count establishes the scale of the emergency, not the number of people newly infected on Monday.
