Brazil's Superior Electoral Court declared Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva re-elected after Sunday's presidential runoff. The court recorded 64,256,232 votes for Lula, or 51.79% of valid ballots. Reuters and the Associated Press put his margin over Flávio Bolsonaro at nearly 4.4 million votes, giving the leftist president a fourth nonconsecutive term beginning in January 2027.

Bolsonaro has refused to recognize the result and demanded that the election be annulled, arguing that a two-hour extension at some polling places invalidated the count. Reuters reported that fewer than 35,000 ballots were cast during the additional period, about 0.03% of the total and far below Lula's margin. The extension therefore does not, on the publicly reported numbers, provide a mathematical route to reversing the outcome. Any formal complaint must still be assessed under Brazilian election law.

The dispute matters because Brazil's institutions now face another test of whether electoral challenges remain within the courts and established procedures. A legal filing is not evidence that the national count was wrong. The next indicators are whether Bolsonaro submits documented irregularities, how the electoral court rules, and whether political leaders and security forces respect the certified result.
